Are you looking for a unique and fun way to add more festive cheer to your Christmas decor?

Consider introducing a Christmas pickle ornament into the mix!

According to German tradition, a pickle is thought to be representative of the spirit of Christmas, so having one hiding among your tree’s decorations can help bring good fortune and joy this holiday season.

Not only will it offer a dash of whimsy to your traditional decorations, but it could also become an annual tradition that family members look forward to!

So, You Haven't Heard About the Christmas Pickle Ornament?

The pickle ornament is easily one of the most unique and hilarious holiday traditions that I can think of! It may sound bizarre at first but add this to your list of fun holiday traditions. It's one that I wish my family had adopted when I was a kid.

As the Christmas Pickle Tradition story goes, a pickle ornament is hung on the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve, and whoever (child) finds it first on Christmas morning gets an extra gift from Santa Claus! What could be better than that?!

Old German Tradition

Did you know that the tradition of the pickle is believed to be a German one that started nearly 200 years ago when they began hanging it?

But there are several theories about the origins of the Christmas pickle.

Which Story Sounds True to You?

One story is that this tradition originated in old-world Germany in the early 1800s when a poor family was struggling to make it through the winter with their two boys and a toy peddler gave them two glass pickles as a gift.

Another story is that a poor shoemaker was struggling financially, and he made two special glass pickles and sold them to a local merchant.

Then there's the one about Prussian soldiers who used to hide pickles in their Christmas trees as a way of keeping themselves entertained. And I heard the one about a 19th-century new world couple keeping themselves entertained by watching their kids search for it.

Okay, the last I heard is that the Christmas Pickle is a cucumber that is grown and pickled in the Spreewald region of Germany. This region southeast of Berlin specializes in gherkins. So, the legend goes that this region was so poor they only hung pickles on their Christmas trees.

Wikipedia States:

One suggested origin came from Camp Sumter during the American Civil War. The Bavarian-born Private John Lower had enlisted in the 103rd Pennsylvania Infantry but was captured in April 1864 and taken to the prison camp. As the story is told, he begged a civil war guard for a pickle while starving on Christmas Eve. The guard provided the pickle, which Lower later credited for saving his life. After returning to his family, he began a tradition of hiding a pickle on their Christmas tree each year.

Another story that originates from Berrien Springs, Michigan is a Victorian-era tale of St. Nicholas saving two Spanish children trapped in a barrel of pickles by an innkeeper.

Regardless of which story you believe, or how the Christmas Pickle Legend Began - the Christmas Pickle Tradition is Here to Stay!
